Org de Rac Organic Wine Estate Swartland South Africa

Org de Rac is an organic wine estate run to strict standards. Every aspect in the production of their wines, from planting and harvesting to bottling and labelling, reflects the estate’s commitment to true sustainability and harmony with nature.

Grapes are grown in previously untouched, healthy soil, carefully nurtured with natural compost and organic nutrients.
In order to control mildew disease, the vineyards have been planted to take best advantage of the prevailing wind direction to allow natural drying of the leaves.
Cover crops planted between rows provide additional organic nutrition, while earthworms bred in the on-site vermiculture facility enrich the soil.
Environmentally friendly pest-control methods include a small army of ducks that patrols the vineyards, ridding the vines of snails and insects.
Drip irrigation, focusing the water where it is needed, conserves this valuable resource.

All picking and sorting is done by hand. This secures jobs for the community, and the estate also offers development and training to staff to empower them in organic farming practices.

The winemaking process adheres to strict organic guidelines. Only half the sulphur content of conventional wine is allowed and no other chemical additives are used at all. Bottling and labelling are done under the same roof.

Org de Rac also grows organic herbs and olives. Lavender and Rosemary were planted in April 2009 and June 2010, and estate-distilled aromatherapy oils are being produced. Olive trees were planted in 2008 and 2010, and the farm harvests Frontoio, Chinos and Calamatas.
