Dragonridge Winery is situated on Fynbos Estate deep in the Paardeberg. The beautiful farm has 30 hectares of vineyards and 270 hectares of nature reserve with glorious walks and spectacular views. One of the mountains on the farm resembles a sleeping dragon, hence the name ‘Dragonridge’.
The farm produces between 20 and 40 tonnes of grapes each year which are used to produce small quantities of handcrafted wines.
The Dragonridge philosophy is simple: make wines from unirrigated vineyards that are pruned and suckered to produce small yields of grapes with concentrated flavours. This also allows minimal use of sulphur, and vinifying of the wines with very little interference. Bottling is done without filtration. All of this means our wines are vegan.
Making wine on the farm began in 2004 with a production of 1 200 bottles. The current production is about 8 000 bottles per year. The reds are a most years a Sangiovese and a Shiraz/Mourvedre/Pinotage blend called Jack’s Red (the Dragonridge version of a ‘Cape blend’); There is a dry rose from Pinotage called Cosmos, an unwooded Chenin Blanc and a barrel-fermented barrel-aged white blend, Galaxy, made from Chenin Blanc and Viognier. In addition Aquila is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, Orion is a wooded Chardonnay and we make a few method Ancestrale bubblies, mostly a Chenin Blanc/Pinotage called Supernova.
During harvest, wine-making getaways allow individuals and groups to enjoy weekends of hands-on wine-making, from picking to bottling. By arrangement, wine-tasting lunches and overnight getaways are available, as is comfortable accommodation and delicious food in the wonderful surroundings of the guesthouse at Fynbos Estate. Fynbos Estate also provides venues for workshops and retreats and all kinds of celebrations – including weddings.
