The Hughes Family Wines is a wine venture near Malmesbury, one of the Cape’s most promising wine districts producing wines of distinctive flavour.

Guided by the warm climate and soils Rhône varieties Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Viognier and Grenache are planted, as well as SA variety Pinotage and the classic Merlot grape. More recent plantings include Tempranillo, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne

The organic approach to viticulture supports a sustainable environment where the preservation of the natural flora, insects and animals contribute to the signature of the wine. The vines receive no irrigation, relying solely on winter rains and natural moisture during the summer.

THE WINEMAKING

One of the results of this approach is the development of strong and healthy wild (native) yeasts on the berry skins which induces natural fermentation and thus enhances flavours typical of Swartland wines.
The red is primarily shiraz, with variable amounts of mourvèdre, grenache and viognier, as well as some pinotage and merlot, depending on their performance each vintage. The final blend spends another four months in barrel before being bottled. ‘The different wines need to get to know each other,’ says Billy.

THE WINE

The name NATIVO encompasses allusions to Billy’s native Argentinian origins, his progress to becoming a naturalised South African and his desire to produce a wine reflective of its source in a natural environment infused with site-specific characteristics. ‘Although we strive to produce innovative wines, we are bound by what the environment actually provides. Through an organic approach to viticulture and minimal intervention during the winemaking process, we hope to reflect that strong sense of “belonging” in our wines. The name NATIVO pays homage to that.’
And hence our mission statement: ‘We handcraft innovative wines that express the full sense of origin.’
